Open the following links, one for Nike England Rugby and one for the Nike Women line. After you look at and read them carefully, answer the following questions. You may do so in a chart.
a. How can the meaning of the text be summarised in a single sentence?
b. Who is the audience in each case?
c. What assumptions do the advertisers make about the audience`s pre-existing knowledge? Is there any type of jargon used?
d. What is significant about the presence or absence of the image? What impact does it have?
e. Which aspects of the advertisements can be described as "socially gender specific"?
f. Do the two advertisements have the same aim? Is that achieved, in your opinion?

Use your notes on the NIKE advertisements to write a Paper 1 essay. You will have to analyse and interpret the texts, and include comments on the significance of the context, audience, purpose and use of linguistic devices (diction, syntax, grammar) as well as tone and register. You should also comment on the visual impact of the advertisement. (HL students compare the two texts / SL select one of the advertisements)
