Mr. Pulford

IB 11 Environmental systems and Societies

September 9th

Read and familiarise yourselves with pages 1-9 from your main textbook.

Equilibria and feedback are two concepts you must be clear about

 September 22nd

Read Ecosystems 17-20 (Chapter 2)

September 29th

Bioaccumulation, competition, predation, parasitism, symbiosis are all terms you should be familiar with

October 13th Quadrats and their use in sampling. Frequency, Density, Transects. Purpose of sampling for ecology.

Answer this question by Nov 3rd:

"How does the tilt of the Earth`s rotational axis cause differences in the amount of heat received at the Earth`s surface?"  (This needs a complete description and explanation of of INSOLATION)

8th Grade Science  (Please note the reminder below on completing lab reports)

Welcome back and good luck for a productive and enjoyable term. Stay on top of your homework assignments and make sure all lab reports are completed and handed in on time.

We start with a module on Chemistry which will involve regular laboratory work to strengthen the theoretical work covered in class.

Homework set 8th September due in Monday, 12th September

Page 5, questions 1, 2, 4 and 5. (Chemical Reactions)

Homework set 14th September. Write up lab report on Acids and Carbonates. This should be tidy, well presented and in a form you can keep for future reference. Be sure to cover all the headings listed in the lab report. Take pride in your written work!

Set 22nd Sept. Once you have all the data from Lab 2 (heating different volumes of water), draw your graphs and complete the lab report which should be thorough and detailed since you have been given plenty of time for this...

Quiz will be held in class on 29th September on Graphs and their uses - postponed for one week

Set 29th September. Lab 3 write up due in on October 5th. This will be graded. make it complete and detailed and include the stages in the format you have been given. Be precise and accurate especially with chemical formulae and spelling!

Set October 4th. Write up the investigation in crystals. Your diagrams should be complete. Revise for quiz on graphs 6th Oct. Make sure you are up to dat on all homework assignments. Read pages 48 and 49 on Reactivity of metals.

Set October 12th. Write up Lab 4 which is a comprehensive comparison of 14 of the elements from the periodic table. Spend time designing and compiling your chart indicating physical charteristics.

N B: Choose two elements which particulary interested you and comment on why they are of such interest.

MAKE SURE YOUR LAB REPORT IS COMPLETE AND OF AN ACCEPTABLE LENGTH, INCLUDING ALL THE USUAL STEPS REQUIRED.  INADEQUATE WORK WILL BE RETURNED WITH A "U" GRADE FOR REWRITING. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

You should be familiar with pages 48 and 49 of the text book. Study pages 50 and 51 on Displacement Reactions in preparation for the next laboratory experiment.

Set October 19th. Read pages 50-51 and answer ALL of questions 1 and 2 on page 51. Make your answers clear and complete

Set November 1st Write up a full lab report on Reactivity Series of Metals (Lab 5). We used Magnesium, Zinc and Copper. Acids used were Hydrochloric (2M and 4M) Sulphuric (2M) and Nitric (2M). Please pay attention to every stage needed for the lab report and follow the sequence on the board in class. We also tested for Hydrogen gas and this `test` for gas needs to be included in your report.

Set November 9th: Your lab 5 reports should have been handed in (Reactivity series of metals). Lab 6 is a demonstrtaion of DISPLACEMENT reactions which also help us to rank metal reactivity. Lab 6 is due to be completed by 16th November and should include a full write up of the experiment demonstrated in the lab this week. In addition to this, please read pages 56 and 57 and answer questions 1 and 5 on page 57. Your answers must demonstrate that you have thought about your answer. Do not make these answers too short.

Set: 25th November 2011. Finish outstanding lab report and revise for test in early December

Test for 8B on 2nd December, 8A on 3rd December. Revise all material as follows: Periodic Table, Groups and periods. Metals and non-metals and their characteristics. Meaning of sonorous, conductivity, malleability, shiny, brittle, crystalline. States of matter (3), Metals and acids. Tests for Oxygen, Hydrogen and Oxygen. Balancing simple equations, Dispalacement reactions, Reactivity series. Names and formula for the post common elements both metal and non-metal. Why is titanium used in aircraft wings? Properties of Mercury. medical breakthroughs, why keep fit? Acids and carbonates. Three most common acids used in lab. What are nitrates, sulphates, carbonates and chlorides? Respiration and formula for this. Glucose plus Oxygen producing what? Limewater experiment. Sodium and Potassium in water. What is NaOH used for? What is Potassium permanganate used for formula is KMnO4. Revise hard and good luck!

Retest for 8B on Thursday 15th December periods 3 and 4.  Homework set 12th December. Read pages 72 and 73 and write a reasonable length answer for question 3: The Solar system if the Sun has been a red star.

Set January 11th 2012: Read pages 74 and 75 and answer questions 1 and 2. (Definitions and Internal Energy)

Study Guide for mid year exam

Set February 15th 2012. Having gone through the material covered in mid year tests, we now turn our attention to a module on Biology. Read pages 22 and 23 of Euerka! and answer questions 1 and 3 on p 23. The answer to q 3 needs some careful thought!

Set February 28th. Read Pages 24 and 25 and answer questions 1,2,3,4 on page 25. Your answers should be more than one line long.

Set March 19th. Read pages 36 and 37 and answer questions 1, 2 and 3. Forces and pressure.

HAPPY EASTER AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL MY STUDENTS!

It has been a real pleasure being your Principal and teacher.

Thank you for all you have taught me.

Work hard and be the best YOU!
