The IB Diploma model above shows the six subject areas students are required to select from, as well as the three compulsory areas which embody the distinct IBO philosophy of the Diploma at the core.
The IB Diploma is a comprehensive and rigorous university entrance programme designed for senior school students. It is offered in more than 4000 schools in 150 countries around the world and it is accepted by all major UK, European, International and US universities.
The major aim of the IB Diploma at ISA is to help students develop into life-long learners and confident, internationally-minded individuals. Since 1972 ISA has always implemented academic programmes which provide opportunities and experiences that develop the whole individual. The introduction of the IB Diploma in 2000 simply reinforced many of the features which the academic programmes at ISA were already designed to bring out and nurture in students to make them Knowledgeable, Communicators, Positive, Caring, Open-minded, Ethical, Balanced, Reflective, and of course Risk Takers, just to name a few of their qualities.
One of the most important aspects of the IB Diploma Programme at ISA is that we have opened the programme to any student ready for a challenge. It does not suit everybody, but it is a myth that the IB Diploma is only for the “elite” academic student. At ISA, we believe strongly in catering for a variety of student learning styles and needs, and the school has the flexibility to accomplish this aim. It is possible for students to take diploma programme courses and to sit the IB exams in one to six IB courses, for which they receive a document called “Diploma Programme Results”. If these students satisfy the ISA graduation requirements, they are awarded the ISA High School Diploma, which is recognized both in Greece and abroad.
To be awarded an IB Diploma, students need to successfully study three (3) Higher Level (HL) and three (3) Standard Level (SL) subjects. In addition to studying the six subjects, students must complete the Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course, do at least 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) and prepare an Extended Essay (max 4000 words) in one of their selected subject areas.
Furthermore, International School of Athens is most importantly a learning environment with an educational philosophy that does not just focus on sitting for exams and getting diplomas. ISA is about providing an all-round and balanced education that provides students the opportunities to develop into well informed and thoughtful adults who will contribute positively to society. The IBO Diploma helps us to facilitate and achieve this important educational aim by emphasizing to students that taking responsibility of one’s own learning is the essence of good education. Once students have understood this, passing difficult IB exams and obtaining Diplomas becomes a real possibility for everyone.
